I know it is not "fashionable" to bash windows nowadays but being someone that *has* to use it mostly against his will I have this random message primarily for myself:

The Windows philosophy is really not a flawed one, In my personal opinion, it consists in developing applications that can be used easily by people who have little understanding of computers, this includes the "user friendly experience", "point-and-click", "plug and play" and other paradigms alike. On the other hand, *nix philosophy promotes developing applications that can potentially be used more efficiently by people who have a great deal of understanding of computers.

Both have their user base, and this is precisely the reason why Windows is the dominant OS; those that don't understand computers far outnumber those that do.

Windows Rant for Today

Of course it's fashionable. Apple does this every day with the Mac/PC commercials on TV, which just proves how desperate they are for market share. Like Macs don't ever crash and never have problems/vulnerabilities. I don't see MSFT doing nay negative advertisement against *nix or Apple for that matter.

Most business users are not tech savvy.Never have never will be. The home PC/enterprise user market is predominantly users who just want to get their jobs done as easily as possible and move on. The Windows platform allows doing this in an almost brain dead manner and hence the market share .Point and click as you put it.
The average computer user base far outnumbers developers and hence the reason why Windows is the dominant OS in my mind.

I don't forsee business users sitting in front of a black console window typical of *nix systems or working in XWindows which attempts to provide a cheap rip off of Windows. Plug and play and point and click are parts of our lives as natural as the air we breathe and Windows does a phenomenal job at providing that experience where *nix systems failed miserably.

Moreover, the ease of developing apps on Windows platform, primarily due to the effectiveness of the developer tools,IDEs, dev platform and frameworks makes it very easy for developers to roll out applications quickly. Can you say .NET

Msoftie,

Fair enough, you have a point and you could've not explained it better within the context of my original "rant", but you see, this is exactly why I think my point still stands and is valid:

I am not pretending to give my company's "business team", a black console window with pixelated-simulated and usually non-standard buttons all over the place, I will give my business team a perfectly capable "Windows PC" so they can salivate all they want using the easy (brain dead) interface that they've came (force?) to like.

I am talking about the developers, the "hard core" IT folks, I can tell you from personal experience, I am not more productive in Windows that I would be in Unix, sure, deploying a "Hello World" app in windows is a fire-and-forget issue, but is it really?, I mean, once you start interfacing with middle tier, back-end code it becomes a monster, esoteric error messages that 1000's of people have asked in forums and the 3x number of answers usually lead to dead ends, in Linux I have a far greater chance to know exactly where is the problem and fix it without having to consult my "platinum" or "gold" partnership-bound "expert" usually to come up with the exact same "answers" that I originally googled (or should it be "binged") months before coughing up the dough to MS).

Now don't get me wrong, Windows is for businesses, but the business decision-makers need to understand that their "beautiful" programs which they see running on their "PCs" in many cases need a stable platform on the back-end side which does not have to be patched (with multiple reboots), virus-tested, malware-tested and so on, I'd estimate that my company uses about 40% of their ENTIRE resources (personnel, $, etc) in maintaining subsystems in windows which otherwise would require only ONE or TWO (skilled) SysAdmins.

Julio, that's too bad you're forced to use Windows when you don't want to. I think you were pretty clear in stating that *nix can be a grear in certain hands, and that group is a minority--M$oftie turned it into an argument against putting X Windows on the desktop of the business people in your office. No one's saying take Windows off people's desks who want it, I think you're just saying don't force it down the throats of those who don't.

What would happen if you wiped your system and loaded Ubuntu?

Man! Our environment is so restricted that there is not a single dvd drive in the building, and all USB ports are disabled, after work, I come back to my house and all I want to do is log in my iMac just to flush my mind..
